John Burton joined Presley Burton & Collier, LLC, in 2006, prior to which time he was a shareholder with Maynard, Cooper & Gale, P.C., in Birmingham.

John has experience in structuring, documenting and negotiating traditional fixed-rate and structured finance transactions for municipal and other types of public clients. Over the course of his career, he has served in all of the typical roles in a bond financing, including bond counsel, underwriter's counsel, counsel to a credit enhancer and counsel to the issuer. A particular emphasis of his practice has been healthcare and education finance. His experience also includes other governmental infrastructure finance and financings for other 501(c)(3) entities.

In addition, he has broad experience in the drafting and negotiating of interest rate swaps and other derivative products for public and private clients. Over the course of various swap transactions, he has represented both swap market makers and end users of derivative products.

John is a native of Tuscaloosa, Alabama. He is a 1985 summa cum laude graduate of Birmingham-Southern College and a 1988 graduate of the Yale Law School. At Yale, he served as an Editor of the Yale Law and Policy Review and was a member of the Moot Court Board. In college, he was elected a member of Phi Beta Kappa, Omicron Delta Kappa and Mortar Board. Prior to entering private practice, John served as law clerk to the Honorable William M. Acker, Jr., U.S. District Court, Northern District of Alabama. He is a member of the Birmingham and American Bar Associations and the Alabama State Bar Association. He is also a member of the National Association of Bond Lawyers and has been a frequent panel participant at NABL-sponsored educational seminars.
